Are You Under Spiritual Attack or Just Going Through a Hard Time?
Spiritual Attack or Just a Hard Time? How to Know the Difference
There are moments when everything seems to fall apart—your energy vanishes, your peace disappears, your mind won’t quiet down, and your prayers feel powerless.
But how do you know if it’s truly spiritual warfare…
Or if you’re just mentally, emotionally, or physically drained?
Knowing the difference can be the key to healing.
This article will help you discern which battle you’re facing—so you can fight with the right tools.
Why This Question Matters
Mislabeling a spiritual attack as anxiety can keep you from praying.
Mislabeling anxiety as a spiritual attack can keep you from seeking help.
God wants us to be whole—spirit, soul, and body. And that means learning how to identify when the enemy is attacking… and when we simply need rest, therapy, or healing from trauma.
What Is a Spiritual Attack?
A spiritual attack is a sudden, targeted disruption to your peace, purpose, and identity in Christ—often marked by confusion, fear, despair, or interference with your relationship with God.
It may involve:
- Fear without cause
- Mental heaviness
- Sudden sleep disturbances
- Disconnection from faith
- Increased temptation
- Attack on relationships
- Illness without explanation
- Blocked progress in areas of obedience
“The enemy comes to steal, kill, and destroy…”
— John 10:10
What’s Just a Hard Time? (Mental/Emotional Fatigue)
Some struggles are:
- Burnout
- Anxiety disorders
- Grief
- PTSD or trauma resurfacing
- Depression
- Hormonal changes
- Poor sleep, poor diet, stress buildup
These are real. They are not weakness. And God is present in these moments too.
“Come to Me, all who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.”
— Matthew 11:28

What to Do Either Way
Whether it’s spiritual or emotional, you are not crazy. You are not weak. You are not alone.
