She asked God to take hers away.

Who Was Saint Rose of Lima?
Saint Rose of Lima (1586–1617) was the first canonized saint of the Americas, born in Peru.
From a young age, her beauty was widely admired. People noticed her. They praised her.
And with that attention came something she recognized quickly:
The danger of being loved for the wrong reasons.
While others saw beauty as a gift to display,
Rose saw it as something that could compete with God for her heart.
The Prayer That Shocks the World

Saint Rose is known for praying that her physical beauty would fade,
so that no one would be drawn to her for anything other than her devotion to Christ.
At times, she even took steps to conceal or diminish her appearance,
choosing simplicity, modesty, and even hardship over admiration.

Because she understood something most of us struggle to accept:
What the world praises can sometimes pull us away from God.
A Beauty That Does Not Fade
Saint Rose did not reject beauty itself.
She rejected vanity, distraction, and misplaced identity.
She chose a different kind of beauty:
- the beauty of sacrifice
- the beauty of humility
- the beauty of belonging entirely to God

This does not mean rejecting who you are.

What is my life drawing people toward — me, or God?
A Prayer to Saint Rose of Lima
Saint Rose of Lima,
pure and faithful servant of God,
you who chose humility over admiration
and holiness over the praise of the world,
teach us to seek what truly matters.
Remove from our hearts
the desire to be seen above all things,
and replace it with a longing to belong completely to God.
Help us to find our worth
not in appearance,
not in approval,
but in the love of Christ.
May our lives reflect a beauty
that does not fade,
a beauty that leads others to Him.
