5 Beloved Prayers to the Blessed Virgin Mary: A Pathway to Grace and Peace

From the humble home of Nazareth to the foot of the Cross, the Blessed Virgin Mary has been a mother to all who follow Christ. Chosen to bear the Savior of the world, she has continued her mission of love and intercession throughout the centuries, appearing to saints, consoling the sorrowful, and guiding the faithful ever closer to her Son.

The Catholic Church has treasured countless prayers to Mary, but five in particular stand out as pillars of Marian devotion. These beloved prayers are timeless expressions of trust, gratitude, and hope.

1. Hail Mary

Scriptural Roots: Luke 1:28, Luke 1:42

Perhaps the most recognized prayer to Mary, the Hail Mary is a beautiful blend of Scripture and supplication. The first half comes directly from the angel Gabriel’s greeting at the Annunciation and Elizabeth’s exclamation at the Visitation. The second half—added by the Church—asks for Mary’s intercession “now and at the hour of our death.”

Prayer:
Hail Mary, full of grace,
the Lord is with thee;
blessed art thou among women,
and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus.
Holy Mary, Mother of God,
pray for us sinners,
now and at the hour of our death. Amen.

2. Hail Holy Queen (Salve Regina)

Historical Origin: Attributed to Blessed Hermann of Reichenau, 11th century

Traditionally prayed at the conclusion of the Rosary, the Hail Holy Queen is a hymn of hope, calling Mary our “life, our sweetness, and our hope.” It is often prayed in seasons of trial, when we long for the embrace of her compassion.

Prayer:
Hail, Holy Queen, Mother of Mercy,
our life, our sweetness, and our hope.
To thee do we cry, poor banished children of Eve.
To thee do we send up our sighs,
mourning and weeping in this valley of tears.
Turn then, most gracious advocate,
thine eyes of mercy toward us,
and after this our exile,
show unto us the blessed fruit of thy womb, Jesus.
O clement, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary.
Pray for us, O Holy Mother of God,
that we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ. Amen.

3. The Memorare

Origin: Popularized by St. Francis de Sales and St. Bernard of Clairvaux

The Memorare is one of the most urgent Marian prayers, a cry from the heart for immediate help. It begins: “Remember, O most gracious Virgin Mary, that never was it known that anyone who fled to thy protection… was left unaided.”

Prayer:
Remember, O most gracious Virgin Mary,
that never was it known
that anyone who fled to thy protection,
implored thy help,
or sought thine intercession was left unaided.
Inspired by this confidence,
I fly unto thee,
O Virgin of virgins, my Mother;
to thee do I come, before thee I stand,
sinful and sorrowful.
O Mother of the Word Incarnate,
despise not my petitions,
but in thy mercy hear and answer me. Amen.

4. The Magnificat

Biblical Source: Luke 1:46–55

The Magnificat is Mary’s own hymn of praise, proclaimed when she visited Elizabeth. It is a song of humility, joy, and gratitude, recognizing God’s mercy and the reversal of earthly expectations: the humble are exalted, the hungry are filled, and God’s promises are fulfilled.

Prayer (Luke 1:46–55):
My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord;
my spirit rejoices in God my Savior,
for He has looked with favor on His lowly servant.
From this day all generations will call me blessed:
the Almighty has done great things for me,
and holy is His Name.
He has mercy on those who fear Him in every generation.
He has shown the strength of His arm,
He has scattered the proud in their conceit.
He has cast down the mighty from their thrones,
and has lifted up the lowly.
He has filled the hungry with good things,
and the rich He has sent away empty.
He has come to the help of His servant Israel,
for He has remembered His promise of mercy,
the promise He made to our fathers,
to Abraham and his children forever. Amen.

5. Sub Tuum Praesidium

Historical Origin: 3rd century A.D.

The Sub Tuum Praesidium is the oldest known prayer to Mary, written in Greek by early Christians under persecution. Its title means “Under Your Protection,” and its words are a plea for deliverance from danger.

Prayer:
We fly to thy protection,
O Holy Mother of God;
despise not our petitions in our necessities,
but deliver us always from all dangers,
O glorious and blessed Virgin. Amen.

Why These Prayers Matter Today

In an age of noise, anxiety, and uncertainty, Marian prayers remain a wellspring of peace. They help us slow down, remember who we are as children of God, and seek the motherly care that Jesus Himself entrusted to us at the Cross: “Behold your mother” (John 19:27).

These prayers are not magic incantations; they are conversations of love and trust. They open us to God’s grace, soften our hearts, and teach us how to follow Christ with humility and courage.
