Elijah’s Holy Sarcasm (1 Kings 18:20–40)

The showdown on Mount Carmel is one of the most dramatic scenes in the Old Testament — but it also contains one of the funniest lines in Scripture.

The prophets of Baal are dancing, shouting, and cutting themselves, trying to get their god to send fire. Nothing happens.

Elijah watches them for hours… then starts roasting them.

He says:

“Shout louder! Maybe your god is deep in thought…
or traveling…
or sleeping…”

(1 Kings 18:27)

The Hebrew word for “busy” can even imply “using the bathroom.”

Elijah, the prophet of God, basically says:

“Maybe your god is on the toilet.”

It’s holy sarcasm — and it sets the stage for God’s fire to fall from heaven moments later.
